She rescues a kitten named Baylor who becomes her constant companion and renovates the building she inherits on the riverfront to create a free animal clinic in the ground floor. Everything is going well—until she hears Tommy’s plaintive call for help.

Above the noise of everyday life, she tunes her mind to the small voice crying out in the old port town. Finding lost or hurt animals isn’t unusual for her. Last month, it was a three-hundred-pound Saint Bernard who was tied to a garage and left behind by his owners.

This time the voice is coming from one of the oldest estates in the city. A small turtle’s leg was cut when his bowl broke. Beside him is the dead body of the woman who cared for him, Ferndelle Jamison, a wealthy society matron.
